His activity as a logician and his attack on all forms of realism in regard to universals can thus be looked on as subordinate in a sense to his preoccupations as a Christian theologian. one of Ockham’s main preoccupations as a philosopher was to purge Christian theology and philosophy of all traces of Greek necessitarianism, particularly of the theory of essences, which in his opinion endangered the Christian doctrines of the divine liberty and omnipotence. Ockham was an independent, bold and vigorous thinker, who showed a marked ability for criticism he held certain clear convictions and principles which he was ready to apply courageously, systematically and logically. There is no adequate reason for challenging his reputation as the fountainhead of the terminalist or nominalist movement. Albert the Great and Roger Bacon we find a combination of the spiritual outlook with an interest in the empirical study of nature. was not radically hostile to the study of the world and in the case of thirteenth-century philosophers like St. We have only to think of men like Albert the Great, Peter of Maricourt and Roger Bacon. Already in the thirteenth century interest had been taken in the Latin translations of Greek and Arabic scientific works, and original observations and experiments had been made. one is not justified in asserting without qualification that a rudimentary appreciation of physical science was peculiar to the fourteenth century, as contrasted with the thirteenth, or that the scientific studies associated withy the Ockhamist movement were the direct progenitors of Renaissance science. The nominalist movement possessed a significance and an importance which cannot be adequately expressed by reference to one particular controversy. ![]() It would, however, be a grossly inadequate description if one contented oneself with saying that the fourteenth-century nominalists attacked the realism of the thirteenth-century philosophers. It is true that they strongly opposed and criticized the realism of earlier philosophers, particularly that of Duns Scotus but it would be an over-simplification of their anti-realism to say that it consisted in attributing universality to ‘names’ or words alone. This appellation is in some respects not very apposite, since William of Ockham, for example, did not deny that there are universal concepts in some sense. The thinkers of this new movement, the via moderna, which naturally possessed all the charm of ‘modernity’, opposed the realism of the earlier schools and became known as the ‘nominalists’. there arose and spread in the fourteenth century a new movement, associated for ever with the name of William of Ockham. 3: Late Mediaeval and Renaissance Philosophy, Part I: Ockham to the Speculative Mystics, Garden City, New York: Doubleday Image, 1953, 21, 26, 30, 59-60. ![]() Introduction to Medieval Philosophical Nominalism and William of Ockhamįrom: Frederick Copleston, S. "I think this speaks to the presence of strong brands. Although concentrates are largely branded by their extractors, the majority of marijuana used for extraction comes from dispensary cultivations, and strain names are still more recognized than cultivators. If you look back a couple of years, you'd see the cost of CBD products have jumped down significantly," she adds.Īnother market advantage that edibles have over flower and concentrates is a higher success rate with branding and marketing. "Hemp CBD is much cheaper than marijuana. Edibles companies use this for their CBD-infused edibles, because high-CBD marijuana strains are more expensive to grow and don't carry as much CBD as their hemp counterparts. But other states are just the opposite, and have been restrictive on the amount of cultivation licenses."Ĭourtesy of Wana Brands CBD is now much cheaper than it was years ago, thanks to vast increases in hemp-derived CBD concentrates, which are no longer federally illegal to produce, Whiteman says. In a state like Oregon, they didn't put a lot of limits on the amount of cultivation or canopy space and plant counts, so people ended up producing a lot of plants," she explains. "A lot of it is a function of how a state has set up its licensing. ![]() With more supply than demand in states such as Colorado (and, to a much larger extent, Oregon), edibles brands are able to take advantage of more dispensary traffic and cheaper wholesale products, Whiteman says. For us, it's about our ability to negotiate based on volume," she says. "The drop in the cost of flower has been an advantage to us." "We haven't seen enormous changes in costs. Nancy Whiteman, CEO of Wana Brands, says that Wana also uses trim-extracted concentrates in its popular infused gummy edibles. A lot of our customers have asked for price decreases over the past few months." "We haven't seen a drastic drop in costs, but there is downward pressure for pricing. The decline in flower prices "just hasn't had a giant impact on the edibles market," Eschino adds, but companies are starting to feel the heat. Incredibles founder Bob Eschino says that most edibles manufacturers infuse their edibles with hash oil that is sourced from trim, not flower - and trim hasn't fluctuated as much in price over the past year. CBD prices are definitely coming down, but that just means it's being included in more products," he says.Īccording to two of Colorado's most recognizable edibles brands, though, prices have held tight for an entirely different reason. "I think the expansion of CBD cultivation is taking place, but traditionally there has been less availability of CBD-dominant strains and extracts. Making a pot-infused candy bar requires more steps and ingredients, some of which are also active, such as CBD and extracted terpenes, or compounds like ginseng.ĬBD products have been a big boost for edibles manufacturers, notes Shoenfeld, explaining that edibles containing CBD increased their market share to 22 percent by the end of 2018 - and typically sell for about 50 percent more than their THC-only counterparts. Infused products such as edibles, topicals and tinctures are more expensive because they're more complicated, he adds. The flower has to be cultivated, then it has to be extracted, and then that to be infused with foods and packaged." "That trickle-down is much slower to arrive for the edibles category, in part because it's a multiple-stage process. "When we look at the trends behind this, since 2014 we've had a lot of tech improvements as well as developmental efficiencies that have driven down the prices of cultivation and, to some extent, extraction," explains BDS vice president of operations Greg Shoenfeld. But those who prefer edibles didn't reap the same benefits.Īccording to dispensary sales tracker BDS Analytics, the prices of flower and concentrates dropped 20 percent and 7 percent, respectively, from the beginning of 2018 through October, yet the price of edibles actually rose about a half a percent. With wholesale marijuana prices dropping almost 40 percent from the end of 2017 to late 2018 in Colorado, consumers who like joints or dabbing concentrates enjoyed cheaper dispensary visits. Anyone who shopped at dispensaries last year likely noted that marijuana prices were dropping, with flower going as low as $15 an eighth and concentrates like shatter and wax selling for $10 or $12 per gram. ![]() ![]() ![]()
![]() ![]() That is one reason the list of credits today, compared with that for a movie made 50 or 75 years ago, is so tediously long. This is giving tap new recognition?Īn increasingly important aspect of an agent's job these days is to haggle over credits. There, on of 14, between the listing for Lucinda Glenn as production coordinator: animation, and Alexandra Gunter as additional production coordinator, is Savion Glover, motion capture dancer. Miller felt the picture could not have been made.Ĭurious, I went to, the Web site for all things cinematic, and printed out the film's complete cast and crew. There are the four writers and the one composer and four executive producers and three producers.īut no mention whatsoever of Savion Glover, the artist without whom Mr. ![]() There is a special oval boasting about the presence of Prince and Gia Farrell on the soundtrack. The stars who provide the characters' voices (Elijah Wood, Robin Williams, Brittany Murphy, Hugh Jackman, Nicole Kidman and Hugo Weaving) are listed twice, once in the middle of the page above the title and again down below with still more voice-over actors, in the credits proper, those that cover those happily tapping feet. The film's multiple award nominations are trumpeted. In a recent full-page "Happy Feet" advertisement in The New York Times there is a giant picture of Mumble, his feet obscured by more credit boilerplate. Glover listed way down the line, as Mumble's dancer and choreographer. Glover's presence, and his role as tap's personification?Īs the film's endless credits crawl past, one finds Mr. Miller had done a noble deed, reminding the world of the glory of tap, and that "Happy Feet" would inspire "a resurgence in the dance, to really help us maintain our presence." Which, in turn, looks unmistakably Savion - the widely spaced feet brushing the floor (ice), the dazzling ornamental flourishes, the spot-on musicality that distinguishes all of Mr. And then how he slipped into his motion-capture suit and went through his paces, the results being transformed into the animation that became Mumble. Glover enthusiastically threw himself into the project, learning to dance, penguin style, with his body upright and his hands at his side (which sounds rather like Irish step dancing), looking straight ahead rather than glumly downward, as is his wont. Glover is "without question the greatest living tap-dancer."īoth articles went on to describe how Mr. Miller told Sarah Kaufman of The Washington Post that he "knew the greatest animators in the world would take a lifetime to pull off the nuances of dancing that a gifted dancer is able to pull off," adding that Mr. "Miller was convinced the only way to tell the story of Mumble," Sheigh Crabtree wrote in The Los Angeles Times, "was to cast the virtuoso hoofer." Glover to don a motion-capture body suit and become the tapping feet of our tap-dancing-fool hero. George Miller, the director, lead screenwriter and a producer, has granted interviews telling how the whole film hinged on persuading Mr. I am concerned here with higher matters, more particularly higher matters relating to the art of the dance. Or even that staring down our hero penguin's throat, with all those layers of pink mucus membrane, looks creepily clinical. Or that it makes absolutely no sense, even as a fairy tale, that the world would unanimously stop fishing in Antarctic waters because one penguin inspired his entire flock, or herd, or school, to tap dance. Never mind that the setting - penguins huddled on the ice - looks like a shameless rip-off of "March of the Penguins," even though the filmmakers righteously insist they had their idea four years ago, before that waddling documentary became a worldwide hit. Glover is Mumble, or Mumble's dancing moves. Glover looked like an unstoppably cheerful penguin. ![]() Almost exactly like the dancing of Savion Glover, at least if Mr. He's a star, Mumble is, and for all his charm the reason is that he can dance up a storm.įor lovers of tap dance, his dancing looks powerfully familiar. And dance he does, joyously and brilliantly, in several really hilarious production numbers. Children of all ages and such.Īnd why not? Here we have an unstoppably cheerful penguin, Mumble, who can't sing (which for some reason penguins are expected to do) but can dance (which for some reason is sternly discouraged). The animated film "Happy Feet" is a big hit for Warner Brothers and for Hollywood. ![]() ![]() ![]()
![]() Since I rarely use the chisel end, I’m always gripping the marker at its widest point, and it feels bulky and cumbersome in my hand. ![]() ![]() I’m indifferent to the taper, but this marker is so thick! The chisel end is thinner at 12mm in diameter, while the brush/bullet tip is thicker, at 15mm in diameter. The body is cylindrical, but with a taper, so one end is slightly wider in diameter than the other end. It feels like a stupid critique, but I don’t like the shape of the Promarkers. Winsor & Newton Promarker & Promarker Brush (Brushmarker). As with many other alcohol-marker lineups, they’re likely based on the Copic and Copic Sketch markers, which also have bullet/chisel and brush/chisel tips respectively. It makes sense that W&N rebranded the Brushmarker as the Promarker Brush, since this makes it much clearer that it and the Promarker are the same marker, just with different tips: the Promarker has a bullet tip and a chisel tip, while the Promarker Brush has a brush tip and a chisel tip. These two alcohol-based ink markers round out W&N’s marker collection, which also includes the Promarker Watercolor, which I reviewed when it was simply the Watercolor Marker, and the Pigment Marker, which I also reviewed. ![]() You know you’ve been sitting on a product too long when it gets rebranded before you review it, huh.
